Motu Trails - the best of backcountry

Ride deep into backcountry New Zealand on an epic historic road.
Tackle a 100-year-old single-track through thick forest, with half the distance hugging a riverside cliff.

Or crank it back, and cruise 10km of family-friendly trail over sand dunes, with massive panoramas of the Pacific Ocean.

Motu 1

• Motu Trails is one of 22 Great Rides of Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail.
Our ride stretches from Opotiki, in the eastern Bay of Plenty, to Matawai, inland from Gisborne. Opotiki is a 90-minute drive from Rotorua. There’s something here for all levels and ages of rider, walker or trail runner:
Motu Road Trail, a 67km historic road, with 48km of gravel, rising to 800m altitude and crossing magical secluded valleys. This road is untamed, prone to slips and windfalls, and susceptible to the full force of weather. It is brilliant.
Dunes Trail, a purpose-built, family-friendly gravel trail which stretches 10km along the Pacific Ocean coastline from Opotiki. This riding is easy and relaxed. Take your time, stop in the shelters, enjoy the views.
Pakihi Track, 20km of single-track for skilled riders, or for trail runners and walkers seeking an incredible adventure in jungle-like, fern-filled forest. The Pakihi is not especially technical but don’t underestimate it, the drop-offs to the side have claimed many a rider! Stay alert, take care, and do pause to enjoy the river and forest.

Motu 3

Do just one trail or combine them in a loop.

From Matawai, you can ride on to Gisborne via Rere Falls Trail, an on-road 'Heartland Ride' of The New Zealand Cycle Trail. This has almost 30km of gravel, lots of big hills, and sights including Rere Falls, Rere Rockslide, and Eastwoodhill Arboretum, the National Arboretum of New Zealand.

Motu 2

Motu Trails Shuttle services are available on demand from Opotiki.

Many groups catch a shuttle to ride the Pakihi, getting a dropoff high above Motu, at 750m elevation. Self-guided and guided trips are available from Opotiki and Gisborne. There’s accommodation around the trails, though being back country, there are very few shops and cafes.

The service directory at www.motutrails.co.nz lists 20+ businesses who are Motu Trails official partners. Please support them as they support the upkeep and promotion of the trails.

Whatever you choose, when you discover Motu Trails, you'll be in a part of New Zealand not impacted by large tourism numbers — unspoiled, incredible places.

To support your planning, Motu Trails Charitable Trust provides a wide range of free information, in print and online.
