ROCK DROP
GRADE: 4/5 LENGTH: 2.8KM
BUILT: Originally built in 2000 by Dean Watson, Rick Todd and Matt Goodman.
Re-aligned in Spring 2009 by the Rotorua Singlespeed Society with help from Red McHale and the Department of Corrections crews.
GETTING THERE: The Entrance is on Radio Hut Rd. very close to the intersection with Trig Rd.
TRAIL DESCRIPTION: An old style track with lots of corners - aiming to maximise the available area to get as much trail time as possible.
The top section of trail runs through dense canopy of Larches. It is welcoming and cool in summer, can be a test for eyesight in dim light during winter. After the rock drop the trail runs through pine forest.
Two iconic rock drops give the trail it's name. Those and a couple of rugged roll-overs on piles of logs provide the more technical sections of the trail. The rest of the trail holds nothing particularly gnarly apart from a couple of rutted, rooty corners in the pines towards the end.
The trail was realigned in 2020 to avoid the new Forest Loop Trail, but the best bits have been retained
GETTING OUT: Delivers you to Pohaturoa Rd where you have several options:
Turn left and head up Pohaturoa Rd. to ride some more trails.
Veer right on Pohaturoa Rd. for a short distance then take the right hand singletrack climb to Rosebank. That will point you back towards the Waipa MTB Carpark.
Roll all the way down Pohaturoa Rd. to the MTB Carpark. A good option to spin your legs out if it's the end of a big day on the bike.
