GRADE: 2/3   LENGTH: 1.3km

BUILT: in 2006 by Murray Avery, Mark Smith and the Rotorua Mountain Bike Club.
The first part of the trail was shortened after logging above it.

GETTING THERE: Most riders will come onto the second part of Pondy New from the end of Split Enz. To access the full Pondy New, ride from the 8 Mile Gate entry to the forest, over Yellow Brick Road Trail to the point where it doubles back then turn left up Sandy Skid Rd.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Pondy New creates a wonderful link between Split Enz and Rollercoaster. The full trail starts with a short but steady climb. Split Enz joins after this, and there’s a long stretch of flowy, downhill. There are large sections of this you can just pump - and lay off the brakes if - you carry momentum. Getting this right from corner to corner is exhilarating. Then just after entering a grove of Redwoods the main trail keeps left, but on the right there is an optional relatively tricky and technical section (a short root-infested climb and descent), then a few rocks before a narrow bridge over the Rocky Horror Trail, followed a couple of climbs to where the trail connects to the second part of Rollercoaster. It is a favourite for many and is a great complement to the style of the immensely popular Split Enz trail.

GETTING OUT: Where Pondy New joins Rollercoaster you are faced with two choices: To the right - this is where Rollercoaster comes in, don't ride up there - it's a one way trail. To the left is a reinstated old exit to Ring Rd. This exit can get confusing so don't take it unless you're confident you can link up to your next trail. Straight ahead is Rollercoaster trail. Follow this out all the way, or at the next junction with a road take the Moonshine trail turnoff. Either way, you'll end up on Reservoir Rd. Riding up Reservoir Rd. will take you to the shuttle pickup point; a left eventually takes you to the 8 Mile Gate entry to the forest.
